The PHDG held the second of its Primary Hockey Festivals in the beginning of December, with 8 teams competing from the Tamarside family of school. Each school had a boys and a girl’s team which consisted of 6 to 7 players in each, with good weather and the total number of players heading toward the 60 mark this day looked to be a great success, which it was.

The festival was set up as a result to five weeks of coaching which has been happening in schools since the beginning of November, set up by the PHDG to raise the awareness of hockey and provide high quality coaching in each of the schools P.E lessons, creating opportunities for young people play hockey in city of Plymouth.

Held at Brickfields, the festival started off at 1.30 with all the young hockey hopefuls rearing to show off their skills and score some goals, the tournament was one of the best seen so far with the level of hockey improving year after year and more teams attending.

After a mammoth 12 game tournament the schools waited anxiously to here the results, for the girls event the winning team were Weston Mill Girls  with North Prospect girls in a close second and third place went to Barne Barton Girls.

The boy’s event was a very closely fought competition; in third place were North Prospect. After being level on goal difference and points it went down to the amount of goals scored between the first and second placed teams, the overall wining school was Weston Mill boys, with Barne Barton boys in a very close second and St Budeaux  in joint third place with North Prospect Primary school.

After a hugely successful festival the PHDG would like to congratulate all schools and players for their efforts which could only be described as outstanding all games were played in great spirits and had high levels of sportsmanship within them.

The next festival will be for the primary schools linked with Parkside family of primary schools, in the next school term these schools will have access to the coaching the PHDG provide and then be able to compete in the next Primary Hockey Festival in February.

Each school that attends a festival has had five weeks of coaching from our highly trained coaches in the build up to the festivals.

Each participant coached in their schools, even if of the lower ability, were offered to join a local hockey club in the area of that school. At these clubs they can learn the laws of the game and build on their skills whilst continuing to play the game and compete in local leagues for their age groups.

The coaching and participation has been excellent and the level of the hockey ever improving.  Our focus is going to continue to develop all that we have achieved so far, both in schools and at the festivals, whilst also introducing zone hockey into a number of schools around Plymouth.  In the near future, we aim to set up a zone hockey club, whereby young people with have a disability can participate fully within hockey.

On behalf of the PHDG I would like to thank the volunteers, teachers and coaches who have help us to achieve our aims and objectives so far and look forward to working with you all again soon.

Many thanks

Ben Blundy
