Hockey continues to grow in popularity within schools across the city with plenty of talent on show at the U15 boy’s tournament held at Marjon. 12 teams from all over the city along with Saltash, Tavistock and Ivybridge entered the event sponsored by DML Sports and Social.

Over the past two years a great deal of development work has gone on at the U13 level. Now the Plymouth Hockey Development group is looking to build on the success to develop an U15 league for next season. The tournament held on Friday was the first event to kick start the groups programme. Hockey development group chairman Jamie Oxley said “the U15 tournament was a huge success. A number of schools were participating in their first ever hockey event. I was particularly impressed with Parkside who had a mixed year 8, 9 & 10 side. The team played some fine hockey and should be proud of their performance” Parkside head of PE said “Hockey has been so successful with the lads and will be something that we will develop further”

In the cup competition Plymstock A faced a determined Ivybridge side in the semi final stages. After a tense 0-0 draw in which both sides had chances to win the tie went to penalties. Even after the first round of strokes Plymstock captain Rob Tippett sealed the win after sudden death with a well placed penalty.

In the other semi a young Plymstock B side beat Sir John Hunt A 2-0 to reach the final. After a lively opening by Plymstock B their senior school side scored four quick goals to win the cup.

In the Plate semi final Parkside were unable to take their chances against Saltash who secured their place in the final after penalty strokes. Joining Saltash in the final were Stoke Damerel who breezed past Sir John Hunt B 2-0. A tight final encounter saw Stoke Damerel convert one of their chances to win their first ever Boys hockey competition 1-0.

Nigel Rowe from DML Sports & Social presented the trophies and certificates to the winners and runners up.
