19th January 2007 - Report on U11 & U13 tournament 2007
The annual Boys U11 and U13 Plymouth invitational hockey tournaments took place at Marjon and Brickfields with 20 teams competing from Plymouth, Devon and Truro. Run by Plymouth Marjon Junior Club & Plymouth Marjon Senior section, the tournaments not only provided an opportunity for young players to impress but also young umpires from across all the city clubs to develop their whistling skills. At Marjon the U13s was once again as competitive as ever. After losing their opening encounter against Plymstock School Plymouth Marjon went on to top their group to face Isca in the semi final who they defeated 3-0. Exeter School who have always performed well at this age group won their group ahead of Isca. Plymstock who secured the runners up spot in group one defeated Exeter School in a close semi final to secure a final spot against city rivals Plymouth Marjon Juniors. In a tight final Plymouth Marjon playing in their new sponsored kit supplied by Crescent Specialist Dentists secured a narrow 1-0 win to lift the cup which they have not won for nearly 10 years. Jevon Rimmer scoring the vital goal with keeper James Sinclair making a number of telling saves.
Winning team: Sinclair, J.Rimmer, T.Orman, R. Johnson, J. Smith, J. Grant, E. Hickey, M. Leach

In the U11s event at Brickfields the standard was the highest for many years illustrating the continued development of the game in the city. In group one Eggbuckland Eagles missed out on qualifying for the semi finals on goal difference to Ivybridge. Eggbuckland conceded only two goals but their 0-0 draw against Isca in the deciding game after dominating long periods sealed their fate. Most improved side of the day were Lipson Lions who lost 6-0 early on against Isca but 1-0 second time round. With Isca winning the group and Ivybridge second their opponents also progressed from a tight group. Truro Prep secured the top spot with Plymouth Marjon narrowly missing out by one point to second placed Meavy. In the semi finals Isca despatched Meavy 3-1 and Ivybridge comfortable 2-0 winners over Truro. The final was a repeat of last years final with Isca and Ivybridge playing out a 0-0 draw. Down to penalty flicks it was Ivybridge who went on to win to retain the title. John Whitfield scoring the decisive stroke and Daniel Daw making the telling penalty stroke save.

In March all the teams will be competing in the Devon mini tournament in Exeter with the goal of securing the Devon title and going onto represent their county in the Regional finals.

17th February 2006 - Devon County Hockey Championships
Nine teams travelled to Exeter to compete in the Devon U11 and U13 Boys County Hockey Championships last Sunday. This was a record number of teams competing in the annual event from the Plymouth area illustrating how popular the game has become in recent years. With over thirty teams battling it out in the two age groups’ competition was always going to be tough. In the U11s event Eggbuckland Eagles, Plymstock Panthers, Plymouth Marjon and Lipson Lions were all in action with Lipson progressing to the knock out stages losing out in the quarter finals.

The U13 boy’s teams were all in fine form producing some good results throughout the day. Manadon Saints and Plymouth HDG both qualified for the plate competition after both finishing third in their group. Manadon defeated Isca with Plymouth HDG recording a comfortable 2-0 win over Teignmouth in the quarter finals. In the semi finals Manadon and Plymouth HDG produced a sparkling game of end to end attacking hockey. Plymouth took the lead when Oliver Elliot Smith Scored from close range only for Tim Orman to equalize. Two quick goals from Tom Hodgin and a superb finish by Oliver Elliot-Smith gave Plymouth a 3-1 lead. A late goal by Manadon from Jevon Rimmer set up a tense last few minutes with the inspirational keeping of Jake Abbott once again the difference as Plymouth kept their opponents at bay. In the final Plymouth HDG battled it out with Chudleigh, with the score level at 1-1 the game went to penalty strokes. Unfortunately Plymouth lost out with Chudleigh scoring the all important winner. The two stars for the Plymouth HDG team with players from Plymstock Panthers/School, Lipson Lions and Devonport Juniors were keeper Abbott and the very skillful Elliot-Smith.

Jamie Oxley, Plymouth Hockey Development Group Chairman, said "Seeing all the Plymouth based teams was a fantastic sight. It is clear proof that the game in the City is developing fast. The talent on show across all the Plymouth teams was exceptional. I am extremely excited by the talent and commitment of the players and the support from the city schools and parents".

In the cup competition three teams qualified after finishing in the top two of their group. Ivybridge finished as runner up behind Plymstock on goal difference with Plymouth Marjon finishing second on goal difference. Ivybridge faced a tough test against St Peters in the quarter finals where they lost 2-1 to an unfortunate goal scored against the run of play. Plymouth Marjon faced one of the title favourites South Dartmoor. Plymouth took an early lead when Tom Alway fired the ball past the Dartmoor keeper. Late in the game South Dartmoor scored a deserved equalizer to take the game to penalty strokes. In a high class flick competition James Grant made a diving save to deny Dartmoor the lead. Plymouth then went onto to score all three to book a place in the semi final where they met St Peters. Plymouth Started the brighter scoring an early goal only for St Peters to score an equalizer with Plymouth on the back foot. Down to strokes again Plymouth were unable to find the pin point accuracy from the spot shownin the last round losing 3-2. Plymstock made light work of ECV Hornets in their semi final with goals from Milo Mackin, Ian White and Rory Coltham. In their semi final Plymstock brushed aside a physical West Buckland team 2-0 with goals from Makin and White. In the final Plymstock showed why they were the best team in the tournament playing some fine fast passing hockey. A goal in each half ensured the trophy returned to Plymouth for the first time in over 10 years. Ian White and the impressive Luke Saunders scored the goals with keeper Rueben McKenzie remaining unbeaten throughout the whole tournament.

The event proved a massive success for Plymouth based teams with Plymstock now going onto to represent Devon at the West U13 Championships on Sunday 5 March.

March 2004 - Devon Mini Boys Hockey Finals – Exeter University
By Jamie Oxley

At this years Devon County U11 and U13 mini hockey finals all three sides from the area reached the U13 quarter final stages. Plymstock School U13’s were unlucky to lose to Exeter School 1-0 while Ivybridge brushed passed Ottery Crickets 5-0. A young Marjons of Plymouth side meanwhile produced a fine performance to knock out last years winners Exeter Cathedral on penalty strokes. Keeper Evan Cox was the hero saving the final flick for Plymouth.
In the semi finals one of the favourites Ivybridge were unable to claw back from 2-0 down early on against Exeter School. At 2-1 with minutes remaining Greg Daw went so close to drawing Ivy level. MoPs in their semi final had Evan Cox to thank once again for keeping them in the game making a string of fine saves. After conceding an early goal Plymouth went close on a number of occasions to drawing level but run out of time.
Heart brake once again for Marjons of Plymouth U11 boys who lost for the second year in a row to eventual winners Ashmoor on strokes in the semi final. After comfortably winning their group and semi final MoPs had to come from a goal down against Ashmoor with Tim Orman firing the ball into the corner in their semi final game. A late flurry in front of goal nearly saw MoPs snatch the win but some desperate defending saved the day for Ashmoor. Level after four strokes Ashmoor converted their fifth with MoPs unable to convert to see the young stars of the future crash out.

February 2004 - 16th annual Plymouth Invitational Tournament
By Jamie Oxley

The 16th annual Plymouth Invitational Tournament was held last weekend with twenty four sides competing across the two age group competitions. Organised by Plymouth Junior Hockey Club this years event was supported by Devonport Junior Hockey club who kindly run the U11 competition at Brickfields.
Manadon defeated Plymouth Juniors 4-3 in an epic semi final with Jack Smith scoring twice for Plymouth and James Grant adding the third. Tim Orman fired a hat trick before Ross Launce grabbed a last minute winner for Manadon. In the other semi Plymstock defeated Exeter Cathedral 2-0 to set up an all Plymouth final for the first time ever in the tournaments sixteen year history. In the final both sides showed why they progressed to the final stage playing some excellent passing hockey. Level at 1-1 at the break Olly Elliot –Smith completed his hat trick to seal the first piece of silverware for the new Plymstock Panthers club.

U11s Final
Manadon 2-4 Plymstock Panthers
Tim Orman, Matthew Oliver – Olly Elliot-Smith(3), Rory Colthan

The U13 boys Tournament saw thirteen teams from across Devon and Cornwall battle it out for the title. Progressing through to the semi final stages were Plymstock School as the best runners up along with group winners Ivybridge Juniors, Exeter Cathedral School and Exeter School. After allowing Exeter Cathedral school to equalize Ivybridge stepped up the tempo to score two further goals to secure a deserved final spot. The Ivybridge goal scorers were Phillip Chapman (2) and Ben Anning. In the other semi final Plymstock upset Exeter School producing a spirited display to win 1-0 with Will Smart on target from close range.
In the final both Ivybridge and Plymstock had chances to win the game in normal time but neither side could convert in front of goal. Into golden goal extra time Lewis Russell stepped up from the back beating a defender on the top of the circle before firing an unstoppable shot into the goal to seal the win for Plymstock School.
With both finals contested by Plymouth based teams the future of the game in this part of the county looks extremely promising. The standard across Plymouth continues to rise through the hard work an dedications of the clubs, schools and the Plymouth Hockey Development Group.

1st November 2004 - Update by Simon Fenwick
The Parkside primary festival before half term was postponed and is now due to be played Thursday 4th November.

The Lipson Junior Club on Wednesday is proving to be the most successful so far in terms of attendance having between 35 - 40 each week. If anybody can help with a bit of the coaching and ideally become a team manager then please contact Simon at sfenwick@phdg.org.uk. With the aim entering the club into the league we will obviously need people to run the teams, I find it hard myself with my involvement with three other clubs. The matches are on Friday evenings @ Lipson from 5.30 - 7.30 (under 11's first hour, under 13's second hour). The teams would not play every week but it would be good if a couple if guys took charge of a team an maybe rotated between themselves which matches they took charge of.
