The latest news on hockey development around the City

Hello and welcome to the third edition of Plymouth Hockey News from the Plymouth Hockey Development Group sponsored by DML Sports and Social Club.
The purpose of this news letter is to keep everyone within the city up to date with current news and events for both clubs and schools.

DML Sports & Social & Sports Match Sponsorship
The group was recently successful in gaining a £7,000 sponsorship deal with DML Sports & Social and Sports Match. This money is to be spent on employing a development coordinator focusing on increasing hockey opportunities within the City. The group would like to thank DML, in particular Nigel Rowe for providing this wonderful sponsorship.

Schools & Community Coordinator
The group is delighted to have been able to fund the services of Simon Fenwick as its Schools & Community development Coordinator. Simon has been in Plymouth for just over 3 years and completed as Sport & Recreation Degree at Marjons. A level one coach and 1st XI MoP player Simon has been coaching in local schools for over two years on behalf of the group. With new funding and sponsorship the group has been able to fund Simons position on a part time basis. New Junior Hockey Club
PGs and Mannamead have recently set up a new junior club based on the new Brickfields pitch. Called Devonport Juniors the club takes place on a Sunday Morning from 10-12pm for more details contact Bruce Danbury. For more information on Junior Hockey Opportunities visit www.phdg.org.uk.

Partnership work & Schools Coaching
The PHDG is working with the Plymouth School Sports Coordinator Partnership to deliver hockey across the city. It is hoped that by the end of the season over 50 primary school and 15 out of the 20 local secondary school will all be playing hockey both within the curriculum and out side.


Tony Pryce & Dita Hockey have signed a 3 year sponsorship deal with the PHDG to supply all groups coaches who coach in schools with coaching gear. A special thank you goes to Ann Shephard who secured this fantastic deal.

Good Practice and Child Protection Course
Monday 8th December @ Marjons
Protect yourself, the young people you are coaching and your employer by understanding and following good coaching practice. Learn about child abuse and how to handle situations if you have concerns. 6.30 to 9.30 pm. The course is designed for coaches, officials, volunteers, parents, young coaches and teachers involved in working with young sports persons.
Cost: £10 for members of the Plymouth Hockey Development Group, £25 for non members of the PHDG.

Level One Coaching Award
Sunday 4th & 11th January 2004 10am to 6pm & Tuesday 6th 6.30 to 9.30pm
Venues – Marjons & Brickfields
Specifically designed for those requiring an introduction to coaching. Candidates should have playing experience, a leader’s certificate or be involved in teaching/coaching the game at a basic level. This includes primary school teachers, club volunteers and helpers, parents, players, umpires, newly qualified teachers and anyone aged 18 years and over who wants to become involved in coaching.
Cost: £90 per candidate to non member clubs and schools, £45 to member clubs and schools.

Forth coming courses in 2004:

New Men’s Indoor League Up & Running
At long last a indoor men’s league is up and running in Plymouth. 6 teams have entered; PGs, Pink Panthers, MoP & Buckets, Penzance, Ashmoor & CCPS.
Running on a Wednesday night from 8pm to 10pm the league continues through until February. For players or teams still wishing to play indoor hockey there will be a cup competition taking place later in the season. For more information visit the Hockey Development Group web site.
