The latest news on hockey development around the City

Hello and welcome to the second edition of Plymouth Hockey News from the Plymouth Hockey Development Group sponsored by DML Sports and Social Club.
The purpose of this news letter is to keep everyone within the city up to date with current news and events for both clubs and schools.

DML Sports & Social & Sports Match Sponsorship
The group was recently successful in gaining a £7,000 sponsorship deal with DML Sports & Social and Sports Match. This money is to be spent on employing a development coordinator focusing on increasing hockey opportunities within the City. The group would like to thank DML, in particular Nigel Rowe for providing this wonderful sponsorship.

School Hockey – Does your school play?
Over 35 primary and secondary schools within Plymouth now play Hockey. The group is hoping to increase this to over 50 schools during the next year. DML Primary Mixed Hockey Festival
Back in June the second Primary Mixed Hockey festival was held at Marjon. 32 teams from 27 schools across the City and West Devon entered.
Skills competition – Winners - Bovey Tracey, Runners up - St Peter RC.
OPM Cup – Winners – Bovey Tracey, Runner up - Ermington.
Plymouth Mixed Hockey League Shield – Winners - Austin Farm, Runner Up – St Paul’s

During the event 21 young umpires completed their award under the guidance of Tina Phillips. The young Umpires came from the following schools; Plymstock, Kelly, Plymouth College and Ivybridge.

Farewell Hoover
I am sure all the schools who have had Matthew ‘Hoover’ Dyson visit to coach would like to wish him all the best with his new job teaching PE on the Isle of Mann. I know the young players and fellow coaches will really miss you. Good Luck Matt.

Leaders Award – ‘8 new leaders’
At the end of August eight young leaders completed their leadership award which is the first step on the coaching ladder. After completing the award the leaders will now be using their new skills to help at local junior clubs or at their schools. Well done to; Donna Wilson, Steven Moran, Holly Uden, Jamie Stormont, Rob Tippett, Olly Cowan-Darcy, Dominic Lovett and Russell Lyth.

U13s Boys and Girls Schools League
This year’s league will see a number of new entries from John Hunt, Eggbuckland, John Kitto, Hele’s, Ridgeway and Plymouth High. The girl’s league will run from November through to Christmas with the boy’s league commencing in February through to Easter.

Indoor Hockey
This year will see the launch of Indoor Hockey within the city for schools. The focus for the first year will be to develop the game for those in year 9, 10 and 11 offering coaching and competitions to schools. In addition to the school competitions there will also be junior and youth club opportunities. The group now has a home for indoor hockey after the John Kitto Centre agreed to support the development of the sport.

Youth Games Report
This year’s games were held in Exmouth on a very hot Saturday. A boys and girls team were selected to represent the City in the U13s hockey competition. Everyone played really well with the boys only losing on penalties in the semi final before going on to win the bronze medal. The girls also won the bronze medal beating Exeter in the play off match. A big thank you goes to Karen Little from the City Council for her support and Simon Fenwick, Hannah Martin and Charlie Helyer for coaching and managing the teams.

Devonport Junior Hockey Club
A new Junior Hockey Club based at Brickfields Astro Turf Pitch – Ragalan Road Devonport is all set to start on Sunday 21st September. The group is firmly behind the new club which is being run by PGSOB Men’s and Mannamead Ladies hockey Clubs. Junior players in school years 3, 4, 5, 6 from 10.00 to 11.00 am and those in years 7 and 8 from 11.00 to 12noon are invited to join. The new club will be fielding boys and girls U9, U11 and U13 teams in local competitions and league over the forthcoming season. For more details contact Bruce Danbury on 01752 268635.

Plymouth Juniors join forces with MoPs
Plymouth Juniors will be joining forces with Marjons of Plymouth HC over the forthcoming season to develop its junior club based at Marjons. Players aged 5 to 16 are welcome to join the club which runs on a Sunday morning from 10am to 12pm. For more details contact Dave Uden on 01752 771220.

Ivybridge Juniors
Ivybridge Juniors which runs on a Saturday morning from 9am to 10am for school years 7 to 9 and 10am to 11am for school years 3 to 6 at Ivybridge Community College. The club welcomes any new interested players and is open to boys and girls starting back on September 13th. After school community Hockey Clubs
Two new junior after school community hockey clubs have been set up in the city over the past few months. These clubs which are run by the development group and supported by Positive Futures and the City Council link school hockey to the city junior clubs:

Manadon Saints – Friday Evenings 4.30 to 5.45, Manadon Astro Turf Pitch, St Peters Road. The club will start on Fridays from September 5th onwards. Manadon Saints is linked to Plymouth/MoP Junior Hockey Club which is based at Marjons. Teams from Manadon will play other local junior teams at U9, U11 and U13 level during the week and a weekends.

Plymouth Bulls – Wednesday Evenings 4.30 to 5.30, Bull Point Astro Turf Pitch, Barne Barton. Plymouth Bulls will be linked to Devonport Junior Hockey Club which is based at Brickfields. Teams from Bullpoint will play other local junior teams at U9, U11 and U13 level during the week and a weekends. Plymouth Hockey Ball
The development group is holding a Hockey ball to raise money for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and hockey development in the city. The ball in on Friday 19th September 2003, at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel, 7:30pm to 1am. Tickets are a bargain at £20 per head, which includes entrance, buffet, disco, and live band - and the ticket is also your raffle entry. There isn't a specific dress code, but black tie/ smart is recommended. For more information contact Ann Shephard Tel: 01822-810710.
