Festival fever in Plymouth has seen four more teams qualify for the Primary Schools hockey championship finals. Eight new teams took part in a 6 a-side boys and girls festival from the Eggbuckland and Estover academic council held at Marjon. Organised by Hazel Barnes a student at Marjon with the support of the Plymouth Hockey Development Group the festival was a finale to a term of coaching inside and outside of the curriculum. Leigham, Compton, Widey Court and Thornbury all battled it out in a round robin event trying to secure a spot in the May city finals. In both the girls and boys events it all came down to the final games to decide to winners. In the Girls competition Compton faced Widey Court with Widey securing a 3-0 victory in an end to end game. In the boys final Compton boys secured a place in the final with a fine 4-1 win in what was certainly the game of the festival.

Held at Brickfields the Tamarside Academic Hockey festival saw another 8 teams compete with the standard higher than ever. Run by the PHDG in partnership with the School Sports Coordinator Partnership the festival now into its fourth year was a competitive as ever. In the girls event Victoria Road proved just too strong for all the other teams winning all their matches to take the title. In the boys event a hotly contested competition saw Ernesettle and Weston Mill go into the final games with a chance of victory. Although Weston Mill secured a fine 4-3 win over Victoria Road, Ernesettle brushed past a young spirited Barne Barton side to remain unbeaten to lift the title.

9th February 2006 -Stoke Damerel Academic Council Hockey Festival 2006
Ten teams from the Stoke Damerel Academic Council took part a six aside hockey festival at Brickfields. The event was the finale to a six week coaching programme run by the Plymouth Hockey Development group in partnership with the School Sports Coordinator Scheme based a Sir John Hunt.

The coaching programme, which is run by the PHDG Schools and Community Development Coordinator Simon Fenwick, is supported by a team of Marjon coaches. Into its fourth year the schools programme continues to be very successful with more youngsters now playing in community clubs.

This years Stoke Festival was without doubt the most competitive admits Fenwick who said “the standard continues to rise year on year which is great to see. What is great to see is the fact that the sport is as popular with the boys and the girls”.

The festival was a round robin event with Stoke Damerel Primary boys and girls teams both unbeaten to take the titles. St Andrews came a close second after losing out in two very close games in the boys and girls events. The event was supported by Sports Leaders from Stoke Damerel who helped the secondary Schools Sports Coordinator Mr Gray to run the festival. Stoke Damerel Primary will now go forward to the City finals in April at Marjon where they will play all the other Academic Council winners who will be battling it out to be crowned Plymouth Primary School Hockey Champions.
